Review- Let Me In

At the Theater- Let Me In -- A dark, brooding, slow-burn horror story that might just be the best the genre has to offer up this year. It’s brave and bloody- a hard R-rated horror film that pays full respect to the heavyweight vampire classics that have come before it.

This Americanized version of the excellent 2008 Swedish film, entitled “Let The Right One In“, is about a tormented boy who is befriended by a young female vampire. Kodi Smit-Mcphee is the perfect 98 pound weakling while the excellent Chloe Moretz, who plays the aforementioned vampire, will be featured in quite a few movies in the next couple years- she played Hit Girl in “Kick Ass” (the sequel is forthcoming). Elias Koteas is serviceable as a cop investigating area murders and Richard Jenkins has a pivotal role as the young vampire’s guardian and blood wrangler.

This is one of those rare remakes where most of the additions and subtractions are for the better. A couple of unnecessary, albeit fleeting, CGI flourishes would be my only complaint.

Let Me In is ultimately a rarity- a worthwhile, quality remake highlighted by one of the more intelligent and sensible endings you’ll ever see in a horror film.

8.5 outta 10
