Review- Blitz
On DVD and Blu-Ray - Blitz - Fans of Jason Statham and films like Dirty Harry, Cop and 10 Til Midnight might want to give this straight-to-video British title a spin. Aside from one glaringly ridiculous continuity goof involving a firearm at the film's conclusion, this is one pretty damned solid production and a very entertaining Drama/Thriller.
There are no car chases, gun battles or elaborate martial arts fight scenes to speak of- this is a straight-forward, character-driven ensemble film about a burnout cop, a few of the other officers in his precinct and a wily psychopath who wages a personal "Blitzkrieg" against them all. It's well-written, featuring a great cast and some top-notch, golden-hued cinematography.
Statham shows flashes of being more than an action star; the script doesn't burden him with the spastic nonsense or logistical failures of the Crank and Transporter franchises and he's allowed to do a bit of surprisingly good acting.
Aidan Gillen (HBO's Game of Thrones and The Wire) is excellent as the unconscionable killer while Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz) once again shines as Statham's straight-laced, gay superior. Newcomer Zawe Ashton portrays a drug-addicted member of the force who finds herself falling for a fellow officer (played by the underused Luke Evans) in a subplot that isn't quite given enough time to breath. It's really my only other complaint against the film.
I think the ending will leave you smiling. -- Recommended, 7.5 outta 10
